Is footwear for work tax-deductible only if it's of a safety-type?
. . . or is any statement in the employee handbook stating that a certain type of footwear is required qualify that footwear expense as a tax-deductible employee business expense?

  • consider this as part of the cost of being employed. you will recoup that investment quickly and it will likely prevent career limiting injuries.
  • You'd have to check with your local OSHA office. It depends how dangerous the area is perceived to be.

We work in heavy metal components, so we are required to wear steel toed shoes or boots. My son works in fast food, so he is required to wear non-skid soles.

Do you have the R correct?

    Should it be 1*10^6 ohm?

    the rest is
    R=(50-3.8)/3.8

you have quite a task ahead of you if you're going on a search for one gothic romance out of the thousands on the book shelves.

Of all the genre in writing/reading romance is the largest. at nearly half of the books bought, of those lots and lots are gothic romance. They are so plentiful that romances of all sub genres(with a few well know authors) are taken off of the shelves and replaced by a new selection after a very short duration.

All of the gothic romances have a damsel in distress, standing, or riding in front of or near a castle, or ruin of some type in a hilly terrain or forest. I suggest that you don't give up the search but I doubt very much that you'll come across the book unless its in someone attic, stores won't have it anymore, and its doubtful the library will either, thou you could give that a try.

Enjoy the search, you've got lots of good reading ahead of you.

Boot Banter - Tidbits about boots, fashion, motorcycles, cowboys, and whatever else crosses my mind at the time!

Harness boots offer great protection from the elements while you're out on a Motorcycle ride. They are also some great looking Motorcycle boots. Some of them have a rounded toe while others have a square toe. The type you wear is completely up to you. It's a matter of preference. They all stand out from the crowd however with that signature ring on the ankle.
Many of them last a really long time and can even be passed down from generation to generation. They are very comfortable. Most absorb shock and do a great job of controlling temperature for a more comfortable wear.

  1. What type of footwear are you required to have on at your place of employment?
Do you need to wear safety boots or dress shoes? Can you wear flip-flops, sandals or snapettes? Casual shoes or tennies? Or perhaps your footwear is part of a uniform and supplied by the company?

Are there health and safety laws on footwear within a workplace such as a shop stockroom?

being more specific it is a retail stockroom. The shelves almost touch the celiling and are filled with clothes so often have to use big ladders. And we have to wear flip flops, doesn’t sound right to me

    Footwear Safety?
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) specifies safety standards for a number of potential workplace hazards. The regulation ANSI Z41-1999 states that the resistance of a person and their footwear be tested with the circuit (series circuit starting battery wired to a resistor (voltmeter connected to both sides of that resistor), then after resistor the wire connects to a person’s hands, which runs current through body down pass the footwear then loops back into the wire to the battery) , with E = 50.0 V and R = 1.00 Omega. Suppose the voltmeter measures a potential difference of 3.80 V across the resistor.

What is the current (I) that flows through the person’s body? (To be safe, the current should not exceed 150 uA)

What is the resistance (R) of the person and the footwear? (Type II footwear, as defined by ANSI, should give a resistance of 10^6 to 10^9 Omega.)
    Sorry R= 1.00 Mega ohms

Does My Employer have to provide Safety footwear etc if there is only four men working for him?
Just need some advice. I have now started a PAYE job after 10 years of being self employed. My Boss say’s he doesnt have to supply safety footwear, But both of the contracts he has on sites state” no safety PPE, NO WORK”. We are a 4 man gang of road asphalters, and lay hot tarmac. He say’s we can get safety footwear on one of his accounts at a builder centre, but he will have to stop the money out of our wages. This does’nt sound right to me. I have just read the health and safety work act 1974 and it says that “if an employer has 5 or more employee’s, there has to be a risk assessment” but there is only 4 of us working for this old scrooge! Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks for the advice boy!

Safety equipment is explicitly allowed as a deduction if it’s required on the job. Any other clothing items must either be unsuitable for off-the-job wear or PROHIBITED by the employer for off-the-job wear.

Steel-toed safety boots, Carharts, & hard hats: Deductible

Logo wear that your employer prohibits off-the-job wear of: Deductible

Logo wear that you employer allows you to wear off-the-job: Not deductible.

Military uniforms: Not deductible UNLESS it’s a utility uniform (BDU, ABU, flightsuit, or fatigues) and you are in the Air Force. (The other services allow unrestricted wear of utility uniforms so they cannot deduct them.)

Surgical scrubs: Deductible if your employer prohibits off-the-job wear. (This one will often slide under the IRS radar though.)

    Police uniforms: Not deductible.

Fire uniforms: Only safety type uniforms are deductible. The dress and ceremonial uniforms are not deductible.
